Each kit piece in Modern and Massive 2 includes sounds from a variety of close and ambient mics that you can adjust on a per-kit piece basis. This lets you dial in the exact kind of sound you want—from a very ambient and roomy sound to a very tight and controlled sound.
-
With the plug-in window open, click the Drums tab, then select the drum that you want to adjust. The selected drum is highlighted in the on-screen drum kit.
-
Click Levels in the toolbar.
-
Adjust close-mic kick drum levels:
-
Use the the Kick In 1 and Kick In 2 Level controls to add or reduce the attack of the kick drum. Each mic is placed at a slightly different distance and angle from the batter head of the kick drum, so each provides a unique type of attack.
-
Use the Kick Sub Level control to adjust the subsonic kick mic to add low end depth.
-
-
To adjust snare drum close mic levels, use the Snare Top Level control to adjust the attack of the snare drum and Snare Bottom Level control to change the amount of snare wires you hear when the snare is played.
-
To adjust tom close mic levels, adjust the Rack Tom 1, Rack Tom 2, Floor Tom 1, and Floor Tom 2 Level controls.
-
Adjust the Overhead Level controls to adjust the amount the selected kit piece is sent to the stereo overhead mics:
-
Many of the cymbals do not have a dedicated close mic. To adjust the volume of the cymbals, use the Overhead Level control.
-
Overheads is a stereo channel that is panned hard left and right, which you can adjust in the Mixer.
-
-
Adjust the Mono and Stereo Room Level controls to add or reduce ambience on the selected kit piece. Using more room mics gives the kit piece more ambience. Using less room mics provides a more immediate or dry sound.
Once you’ve set the levels of each kit piece, you can adjust the overall level of the mic using the corresponding channel in the Mixer. How the fader levels in the Mixer interact with the level controls in the Drums tab depends on the type of mic:
-
For close mics, Level controls in the Drums window are linked to the faders of the corresponding channels in the Mixer. When you adjust a close mic’s Level control in the Drums window, the fader level of the corresponding channel in the Mixer mirrors the change (and vice-versa).
-
For ambient mics, the Level controls in the Drums window adjust how much each kit piece is sent to an ambient mic channel. To adjust the overall level of an ambient mic channel, adjust the fader for the ambient mic in the Mixer.
